Dealing with Terrorism

How could this happen? Why did this happen? Is this going to happen again? Am I safe? These are some of the questions that you may have heard people asking recently. Maybe you've asked them too. There are no easy answers. Everyone is feeling sad, angry, and confused. It’s normal to feel this way after a horrible tragedy. But don’t get too down. If you feel that you’re getting too down, ask for support from a trusted adult. Here are some things to think about:

  • Talk to a trusted adult, like your parents, family, or a school counselor about your thoughts and feelings. It’s important to get them out.
  • Write your thoughts and feelings down. Sometimes it’s hard to talk about the terrible things that happened. You may feel better just writing them down in your diary.
  • Be a good listener. Be there for your friends and family.
Be kind and respectful to others. Don’t repeat any negative comments that you may hear about others.
  • Ask your parents or family if you can go to a memorial service or vigil for the victims of this tragedy.
  • Check with your school to see if they are offering grief and counseling sessions.
  • Ask about volunteering opportunities in your community.
Offer to help around the house.
  • Keep yourself busy. Read a book, listen to music, draw a picture, try a new recipe, or bake some cookies.

If you’re having trouble eating, sleeping, or concentrating, talk to a trusted adult. And have faith that our leaders will handle the situation in the best possible way.
