Analyzing Tobacco Ads

Graphic of Girl Painting

The goal of this exercise is to help youth understand the harm cigarettes cause and the power of advertising.

Materials needed: Construction or poster paper, paints, crayons, markers, cigarette advertisements, scissors, glue

  1. Assign your students to bring in cigarette advertisements that they collected with their parents. Tell them they are going to "improve" the ads so they show the health consequences of cigarette smoking.
  2. Have your students cut up the original ad and rearrange or change the words, or alter the image to show the health consequences of smoking.
    • Show a model smoking with dirty teeth, yellow fingers and black lungs.
    • Have a cigarette-ad cowboy riding his horse through a graveyard.
  3. Have your students explain the changes they made to their adsand why they made them to the other students in their class.
  4. Let your students display their poster ads on the walls of the classroom or in the school hallways.
  5. After letting other students view them for a while, have your students take the posters home to show to their family and be displayed on the family refrigerator.
