Puppetry

The goal of this exercise is to apply refusal skills in a role-playing situation using hand puppets.

Materials needed: cloth, felt, fake fur, socks, buttons, plastic eyes, thread, needles, scissors

  1. Explain to your students that puppets have been used for centuries to express ideas, stories, morals, and legends. Share examples using art books and other illustrations of the kinds of puppets that were used from various cultures.
  2. Assign your students to make hand puppets using basic sewing techniques and simple materials.
  3. Discuss refusal skills with your students as a way to cope with peer pressure to participate in risky and unhealthy behaviors such as trying alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs.
  4. Assign your students to research refusal skills on the Prevlink web site and then write a puppet skit script to relate the skills they have learned in an exaggerated manner. Have the students perform their scripts to the class. You can also have your students perform exceptional scripts for elementary students in teams.
