My Family

The goal of this exercise is to understand the influence of an individual's
family on an their attitudes, values and beliefs about the world including
those relating to drug use and other risky behaviors.
- Begin by discussing with your students the many forms, sizes, and
shapes families come in, including: two natural parents, single parents,
step-parents, grandparents, foster parents, brothers, sisters, aunts,
uncles, cousins, and other relatives. Then send time with your students
discussing the meaning and importance of "family."

- Assign your students to write down a listing of their influential
family members and ways in which they feel they are impacted positively
or negatively by each of the. Have your students include examples of
activities that they are involved in with each family member they include
and discuss the impact of those activities on their relationships and
self-image. Finally, have them write a paragraph about an event or accomplishment
from their family history that makes them feel proud to be part of their
family.
- For extra credit or an alternate assignment, you can have your students
design a photo collage, montage or family crest to represent their families.
