Exercise To Relieve Stress!

The goal of this exercise is to understand how exercise is a healthy alternative to drug use to relieve stress.

  1. Begin by explaining to your students that:
    • exercise increases the flow of oxygen through the lungs, causing the heart to pump harder, increasing the flow of oxygen to the brain, muscles, skin and other organs
    • the increased flow of oxygen through the body combined with weight/resistance training leads to positive changes in the body that are noticable very quickly
    • everyone's body will respond to this combination
  2. Ask your students to name different kinds of exercise.
  3. Assign your students to write a report and prepare a presentation for the class on one form of exercise that he or she is interested in. The report and presentation should contain the following details:
    • a description of the physical benefits derived from this type of exercise
    • place that people can go locally to participate in this type of exercise
    • details about someone who excels in this form of exercise locally, nationally, or internally
  4. Assign students to do research the negative affects of steroids and other drugs on athletic performance on Prevlink. Lead them in a discussion of their findings. Remind them about your schools rules about performance enhancing drugs and supplements as well as alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use.
